Bright white sharply outlined lozenge-shaped object. Explanation: Balloon.
Delton Schwanz, commercial pilot of 29 years' experience and past AAF/AF service, with wife Delia and children Robert, Roger and Diane, were 5 miles southwest and 20 miles west of Crosby, North Dakota. They saw a bright white sharply outlined lozenge-shaped object (length/width ratio 4:1) to the west, at an elevation of 15°-20°, momentarily stopped. It then moved in level flight to the left, with a smooth climb in the southwest, and dropped white "strips" of light that descended vertically. It disappeared to the south at azimuth 170° by ascending to about 30°-45° elevation. George Larsen and Larry Pateof were independent witnesses, driving by car 20 miles west of Crosby near the intersection of Highways 5 and 85. They saw a large white light move rapidly from west to south, dropping a "piece" of the object, and disappearing suddenly. An unidentified object was sighted, but with appearance and behavior that most likely would have a conventional explanation. One white oblong object was observed by seven witnesses two of them independent for one minute. No sound was heard.
