A Civil Defense Director, and a group of students observed lighted object near the ground, which appeared to maneuver for about two hours. Explanation: SwampGas.
College students saw a football-shaped object with red-green-white lights. William Van Horn, Civil Defense Director and rated commercial pilot, and police arrived. They conducted a ground search from one half to two miles away to the east, but found nothing. When Van Horn reached the college dormitory, using binoculars, he and many students saw a 20-25 feet diameter, maneuvering, lighted object on or near the ground about 1,500-1,700 feet away to the east. It had a dirty-white light on the left and a dim orange light on the right. These brightened after ten minutes to white and red, and the object began to rise at a rate of 25-30 feet/min to a height of 100-150 feet. It then stopped momentarily, then descended, and repeated this motion several times. At one point on a descent a "convex" surface between the lights could be seen. Radiation was later detected at the landing area about 600 microroentgens/hr, roughly 30-60x background level, and possible boron contamination. An object was sighted that had an appearance and performance beyond the capability of known earthly aircraft. One green-orange ball, about 20 feet across, was observed in stormy weather by 18 witnesses at a college for several minutes (William Van Horn).
