Five foot x three foot, metallic top-shaped object, seen by multiple witnesses jumping across road. Explanation: Hoax.
Mrs. Marie Garcin and Mrs. Julia Rami, walking northeast on Road D24, heard a loud deafening noise and saw about 300 feet ahead of them a five feet tall, three feet wide, metallic, top-shaped, object, covered with vibrating sharp spines, landing near a road sign. The sign started to vibrate loudly, then the object hopped over the road at a height of about 15-30 feet. The women cried out. This caught the attention of another witness, Mr. Jules Boglio, about 1,000 feet away. He looked and saw the object land a second time in the next road, then jump over another road sign, which also vibrated with loud noise. Two other witnesses reportedly saw the object at a much greater distance. An object was observed. Electromagnetic and gravity effects were noted. Traces found. One metallic top-shaped object, about 5 feet across, was observed by three witnesses on a road for one to two minutes (Boglio, Jules; Rami,Julia; Garcin,Marie).
Hynek summarized:
There reportedly landed on a road about 300 feet from two elderly French country women a curious metallic machine in the form of a big top about 5 feet tall. Just as it landed, a deafening rattle was heard coming from a metallic road sign some 15 to 20 feet from the landing site. The sign had been set into violent vibration.
The cries of the women and the noise from the sign were heard by a man nearly 1,000 feet away. Thinking that there had been an accident, he went rushing down to them. He arrived in time to see the "top" jump off the road to a height of about 20 feet, turn, and land a second time, this time on another road, which forked from the first.
As it turned, it flew over a second road sign, and this one likewise vibrated violently, resonating as though it had been subjected to "violent shocks repeated at a rapid cadence."
Later the local police placed a compass near the two signs that had rattled and found a deviation of some 15 degrees. Placed next to the Renault in which they had come, the compass showed a deviation of only 4 degrees, but there was no deviation at all near a sign that had not rattled.
The French police adjutant in the area vouched for the integrity of the witnesses: "He affirmed at once that the witnesses are not only of good faith but they are above any suspicion of a hoax."
The case was routed to Blue Book by the air attache in Paris, through the Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Headquarters, USAF. The attache stated: "While no credence is given to this report, previous experience with incidents of this nature dictates that USAF files should indicate that some official action had been initiated, in the event any official or public inquiries are made regarding this incident." Blue Book evaluated the case as a "Hoax".
